No one lies like a politician. The age of sound bites and 30 second ads has only accentuated the superficiality of the misleading pronouncements that come with distressing continuity, 24 hours a day, on television, radio and internet. The increasing concentration of media outlets in the hands of a few multinational conglomerates and the worldwide syndication of reporting also means that it is ever more difficult to access different points of view. The internet, while promising openness and easy access to information, can as easily confuse and overwhelm.
People lead busy lives, and don’t have time to research every statement made by a politico or self-proclaimed expert. This page is dedicated to investigating the more interesting and important claims made and either supporting or refuting them. Exclusive use will be made of primary sources: government data, reports and publications as well as those of respectable international bodies like the IMF, World Bank, OECD and similar.
Post your wishlist of myths you’d like busted and I’m happy to address them!
