Historic Nuclear Deal with Iran Reached

Share

The Five +1 nations have reached an agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran for the peaceful resolution of the nuclear impasse, says the New York Times.

This is a “Nixon going to China” moment in US foreign policy. If the deal holds, and if the Iranians live up to their end, and if the Saudis and Israelis come to accept (though never love) the new modus vivendi, it will fundamentally alter the strategic alignments in the Middle East and should lead to greater stability.

Admittedly, those are a lot of “ifs”. But given the current civil war within the Sunni Arab world and the existential threat that the Islamic State poses to Arab regimes around the region – but most especially to Wahhabist Saudi Arabia – it is inconceivable that the US should chose to go to war with Iran. No greater debacle can be conceived since Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in 1941. When we then take into account the state of our own military and the growing challenge posed by Russia and especially China, it only reinforces the folly of wasteful, protracted, uncertain and ultimately futile war against the Persians. It would cripple us for another decade, even worse than the tragic blunder in Iraq.
Common Sense will soon provide a full analysis.
