Take action on pending Free Trade Agreements!

Congress has three critical free trade agreements pending votes: with South Korea, Colombia, and Panama. All three have been painstakingly negotiated over a period of years, starting with the Bush Administration, and all have the support of the Obama Administration. Furthermore, all bring important economic and strategic benefits to the United States. The US-Korea FTA alone is estimated to bring $12 billion in economic growth to the US economy.

If you think that increasing US exports, creating new American jobs and growing the economy are important issues, then write to your Congressional representatives and urge them to pass these bills. In order to make things easy for you, I’m including a model letter you can use. Just cut, paste and edit the name of your representative.  If you don’t know who your Congressional representatives are, or how to reach them, just go to www.congress.org and type in your zip code under the heading “Get Involved”.

Dear (title and name of congressman),

I am writing to you to urge your support for the immediate passage of the free trade agreements negotiated by the Bush and Obama Administrations with the Republic of Korea, Colombia and Panama.

The three FTAs will substantially reduce these trading partners’ tariffs on U.S. goods, opening large markets for U.S. commerce and professional services. In combination, they will increase the size of the U.S. economy by about $15 billion. Furthermore, they will help reverse a slide in U.S. market influence in two important and increasingly affluent regions of the globe.

Approval of all three agreements is in the national interest. They will create new jobs and opportunities for American workers and businesses in a time of economic hardship. Congress should approve the trade agreements with Korea (KORUS), Colombia (COL-US) and Panama (PFTA) without additional delays and the President should sign these agreements into law.

Thank you.

Very sincerely,

(Your Name)
